I LOVE places like that. We live a little south of Old Forge, NY and driving up that way we pass dozens of antique shops, reminds me of them is all.
Awesome pictures.

I wish there were someplace like this in FLORIDA! Any tips for the sunshine state....went to a farmers market and found more knock-off sunglasses than great antique goodies!

Looks like a fun place!
They are eccentric buggers though, aren't they??!! And I know what you mean about pricing - it's just not the same as finding your own diamond in the rough!!

Really cool photos, Kelly. My favorites are the bowls and the bike. I need to go there.

Being so far from UT I have to remind myself that it is not realistic to think about going there!
This reminds me that last weekend while driving with my 13 yr old daughter we passed an antique store that looked fun. She piped up with, "that place looks neat, we should go sometime." I never knew she was really interested in looking at junk with me, she's gone with me before but I thought unenthusiastically.
So I'll take her up on her offer and put it on the calendar.

Too ironic not to comment...
I just found your blog about two weeks ago (loving it), and today I just returned from a trip to Utah. My sister lives in American Fork and took me to Star Mill. I fell in love with the place, whipped out my camera, and was attacked by the owner telling me he charges $15 to take photos. He wasn't very nice, especially when we thought he was joking. I was too upset about his reaction to fork up the money.
And I definitely know what you mean about preferring thrift store prices to antique store prices. I feel so good about myself when I see something at an antique store for $40 that I paid $1.99 for.
So anyway, hello.

Wow what an amazing picture and gorgeous girl! I haven't stopped in for so long...warms my heart peeking in on you guysies! :) We're coming through UT for a few days around Thanksgiving and would love to stop by to say hi and perhaps steal little Cate (or is it big, grown-up Cate?) for an outing. Then we're off to the big island...we'll make sure to always have an extra cozy space for favorite guests though!

I am pining to visit this place. We're going to visit family in AF for Christmas. Do you know if they are open during the winter?
Does he really charge for taking pics?

Just saw your post about taking photos at the old mill. I've always wanted to stop and take photos there, do you just offer to pay for the photos or does he charge a set rate?

I know you posted this months ago, but a on Wed. I heard about Star Mill, so I googled it to find the address and this post came up! I said to myself, I already read her blog! How cool!
We talked to Daniel the owner while we were there and he was definetly eccentric.
He told my mom though, that he fell off the roof of one of the buildings near the mill over 10 years ago and that he had brain trauma and wasn't expected to fully recover... He said it took him two years to learn how to talk again. Later he told us that his wife and two children were killed by a drunk driver years and years ago before his accident. So sad! Explains his eccentric-ness though :) if it's true that is....

I love this place. Something about it draws me to AF. I first found the mill when doing genealogy research. My great Grandfather had purchased a mill and I had stopped their and spoke to the owner about the Star Mill thinking maybe it was the one my family had owned. Ended up not being the one, but it has a wonderful history of its own. I found the owner to be very nice. He even helped we with some of my research. I don't find many people willing to help a perfect stranger.
Thanks for posting about the Mill. I think it is time for a AF trip...

I live around the corner from the Star Mill and often go past on my running route. We are planning on taking family pictures there and I am glad I read through your comments. I will definitely be making arrangements with the owner first!

Can you tell me who was the original owner of the Star Mill?

it's pretty cool there but i sometimes swear on my life that it's haunted haha
Posted by: Kaylynn | April 03, 2010 at 03:58 PM
does anyone know hoe much they charge?
Posted by: V | May 11, 2010 at 03:46 PM
you "believe in the golden rule"?
i suggest that you put that trite little phrase into action and refrain speaking poorly about others on the internet.
daniel, the gentleman who owns this store, has had his own fair of trials. to write unflattering things on the internet about others for the rest of the world to see is very low-class.
