"he that loves a book will never want a faithful friend, a wholesome counselor, a cheerful companion, an effectual comforter. by study, by reading, by thinking, one may innocently divert and pleasantly entertain himself, as in all weathers, as in all fortunes." - r.h.barrow
reading is one of the great joys and best comforts of my life. it is so pleasing to me to see my little offspring find diversion and happiness in books, and get the same kind of excitement that i do for a trip to the library (even if it means settling your fines).
i have noticed that if i let her read when she's on time out it shortens the time in half till she's back to her normal self and wanting to apologize for an outburst. if i bring her a book to the bathroom she relaxes and has less trouble than she normally does in there, if you know what i mean.
the best is when i tell her to put down her book and do something and she begs for one more page. yes, she is in danger of being quite as eternally addicted to and dependent on reading as her mother. fortunately, it's the one addiction i will pass along with delight.

i'm so glad your girl is following in your footsteps! my daughter is, i think, the same age as yours (7) and she seems o.k. with reading, but i want her to be "addicted to the written word" like i am.
do you have any suggestions for good books for girls that age? or anything you've done that you think has helped her learn to love reading?
thanks!

jo! i LOVE that you quoted ever after. i heard drew say it in my head as i read it. honestly, i was worried about cate and reading for awhile. she didn't love it right away.
but i really believe that people who don't consider themselves "readers" is because they just haven't read a book they really LOVED yet. as soon as they have that experience they won't be able to wait to read again.
it wasn't until cate found the geronimo stilton books that she had that experience, i think. she loves them, and so has learned to love a moment stolen with her books- and then that has made her want to find more that she loves.
and of course our weekly trips to the library with her own card and bag where she can get as many as she wants gets her slowly but surely more and more into it.
another thing i think has helped is when i can tell she wants to hang out with me i offer to have a reading picnic- we go outside with a blanket, snacks, and our books. she likes that alot.
good luck jo!
it may take longer or shorter for each kid, but i believe if you are a reader and have that available to them, they eventually follow suit.

Kelly,
I just randomly came across your blog. I still remember when you fixed Jaron's jacket for us. When I saw your name I just knew it was you. (The bubble baths confirmed it!) I hope you are doing well.

Thank you for that quote - I love it!! I have been sad that my son is totally not an avid, voracious, addicted :) reader like I am, BUT then we happened upon audio books and he is loving those, so that makes me happy.
Oh, and sometimes I need a time out with a book too.

Kelly, I love you. But, I am way too old apparently to see well anymore. :) Please, please? Just one point bigger maybe?

So happy to see the love of reading pass on down the line. I hope my one-day daughter will have the same connections to books, my dearest friend. I love the books and reading quotes you always find!

The author is really cool. But some of the commentators are just posting stupid words.
